Jakub has a background in the food industry, working as a Cafe Manager in London. Although he is used to the industry, his day-to-day work doesn’t involve cooking. The 3 week Culinary Skills Certificate has provided the stepping stone he needed to further his career. Here he tells his story…
What is your career background?
I’m currently working as a Cafe Manager in the London area but it’s not really a cooking role. I manage the operational running of the cafe rather than working in the kitchen. I do the paperwork, manage the rota and a team of 6 staff. My dream is to become a chef and have a hands-on cooking job in the future. I’d love to be able to cook for a living.
Why did you decide to take the course?
I wanted to test the water, get new skills and gain confidence. My motto is “knowledge is power” and I think the qualification will help me get my first job in the kitchen. I need to get used to the stress of working in a professional kitchen.
What made you choose WhitePepper?
I always go for the best, and I chose WhitePepper because of the amount of awards they have won, and their excellent reputation. I did lots of research online and it has definitely been the right choice for me.
How did you feel once you’d booked the course?
I felt nervous because it was a new venture, but it’s not been as scary as I thought. I felt like I needed to prove to myself that I could do it. It’s definitely boosted my confidence.
What skills do you feel have most improved?
All of my skills have improved; I’ve started to bake, fillet fish and learn butchery. It’s been very professional too.
What have you enjoyed most about the course?
I’ve enjoyed everything. The tutor Luke was fantastic, he was very motivating and encouraged you to get on with cooking. Being able to spend 3 weeks in the kitchen cooking has been fantastic and I’m confident it will lead to work in the kitchen.
