Alexis wants to pursue a culinary career and has gained the skills and qualification she needs to take the next step. She is a graduate of the 3 week Certificate in Culinary Skills course (September 2016). Here she tells us about her experience…
Tell us about your background and reasons for choosing the course
My Grandma is Italian and has always encouraged me to cook, and I’ve always been interested in food writing, recipes and blogging. I have a Nutrition Degree, and wanted to do the course at White Pepper as a stepping stone to get onto a Culinary Management Degree. I thought the course would give me more skills and a qualification at the same time. It has been much more intense than a recreational course, and I have learnt an incredible amount in 3 weeks!
What were your reasons for choosing White Pepper?
The programme looked ideal for what I wanted to learn, and the September timing was perfect. When I researched cookery schools online, White Pepper was listed on a blog as one of the Top 10 Schools in the World. I come from Texas, USA and I wanted to learn at a critically acclaimed school in the UK.
What skills do you feel have developed?
I’ve definitely become more confident at rolling pastry and learning different pastry techniques. Also, my overall knife skills have hugely improved.
What have you enjoyed most about the course?
I’ve enjoyed the course so much, that when I had days off, I wished I was back in the kitchen! I’ve enjoyed the challenging environment as it has given me a feel for life in a professional kitchen. I’ve loved the amount of hands-on activity combined with cookery demos. The small class size has been a bonus as it has meant more time with the chef tutor, and Luke’s teaching style has been amazing. The entire group was so much fun!
